Just beyond the outskirts of the town of Twin Peaks, beyond the hubbub and the deals, the traders, the hunters, the killers, the petty wise-guys with their lop-sided contra offerings, or the wide-eyed new arrivals who contemplate them, the ostentatious displays of wealth, or of  power, or of...depravity, the wanton expenditures even of life and limb, beyond all these things which the exigencies and vicissitudes of a natural existence force upon the otherwise healthy minds of normal men and women - who, afterall, bear no fault for which the existential burden was thrust upon them - or to which an inbuilt yet inexplicable predilection for the mundane has dimly and prosaically and even yet perversely led their steps, beyond the psychic perimeter that usually marks the ambit of concern to the ordinary man or woman caught in the grind of life and death, beyond these matters of practical concern stands a creature totally alone. Alone, and wearing a beak.

He is, in his own mind, The Beaked Crusader. Watching from on high, he stands as a sentinel, a guardian, a protector against the dark forces he perceives imperil this town. In its ignorance of his pre-destined mission, the babel heaves and throngs. The bat-like figure with the ridiculous beak is unmmoved, his resolve complete. To him appears to have fallen a vision no others have, abilities no others can know, sufficiient stupidity to embrace the delusion which he suffers, and sufficient sturdiness of heart to see it through. He will not shirk. He will live, in seclusion, above this double locus of iniquity and hope, and watch over them.

It is a thankless task, as well it might be, for there is little or no purpose in its performance. No one cares what is imagined by The Beaked Crusader, what he hopes, or fears, or against what dangers he imagines himself so gallantly deployed. He is, in reality, just another idiot. He is The Beaked Idiot. Whoever this masked and meaningless marvel may be, shed a tear for the pathos of his condition, as he wanders in isolation the crags above Twin Peaks, muttering, singing, chanting to himself - NA-NA na-na NA-NA na-na NA-NA na-na NA-Na na-na Batmaaaaan!!!! with the occasional "KAPOW!" or "ZAP!" heard drifting down from the heights. carried on a zephyr from a world wholly other and alien to our own.

Wow.....  I had to look up 3 the following words: ambit, exigencies, and vicissitudes.  I'm impressed!

Alone and ridiculous, The Beaked Crusader never ceases in his vigilance...

The light of imagined virtue blazes
in his mind. The alien sun under which he stands
illuminates the path, to righteousness or perdition
he cannot know. It is his sun, his path. Ever
wary of pernicious or corrupting influence, it alone
guides his steps,

Yet the way is long, the cost great. Thought just
a plain fool by all who give him thought, who are
but few, The Beaked Crusader pays dearly for his
commitment to....

...the ineffable, he thinks. That which cannot be
named. It might be called justice, or 'the good' -
just words that cannot capture in his mind, such as
it is, the pure quality of hope he seeks to preserve.
He stands against the dark within us all, and which
manifests in the grim doings which ever play at the
edges of our minds - or his, feeble as it is.

But wait! - what doings are these? What stench? What rise of malicious and avaricious intent now threatens this place? With the innate sense of many afflicted as he clearly is, The Beaked Crusader detects a rising danger, even from these heights... The ungodly smell alone, wafting to the cliff tops confirms his suspicion. The dark prepares to rise - The Beaked Crusader steels his mind to the task ahead...

Ok, I couldn't resist.  I have to add my Dr Seuss inspired contribution

The beaked crusader stands on high
I like his wings but can he fly?

His beak’s a shoddy costume prop
Watch your step, that’s quite a drop!

He guards against a force unknown
But can he do it all alone?

He thinks he’s dim, not quite a spark
To stand against the forces dark

Perhaps he has a point to make
(though not the beak, that’s just a fake)

He may be right to live in fear
Of what we cannot see or hear

We spend each day in mortal dread
Of wasted time and wasted PED

If he can fight with wing and beak
The force that kills our lucky streak

Then I say we should stand by him
Side by side, our faces grim

Unless he’s wrong, if that’s the case
I’ll knock his beak right off his face!

Oh wow, fantastic - Kedar this is truly great. I am so sorry I have not seen it until now! I thought it worth quoting in toto so good is it! I would go so far as to say it's a masterpiece. Bloody well done (as we say in Australia). THAT, boys and girls, is talent!
