This story is being submitted as the first in a series of monthly articles about the Michigan Militia Cadets.

Most of the information is factual, although I have taken some literary license to fill in the gaps my feeble memory is not able to accurately recall.

Names withheld for privacy...

What we do…

Over the past several weeks, I have been working closely with a Michigan Militia Cadet who’s mentor has been unavailable ingame.  About a week ago, we were at Chug’s on our way back from an outpost “rescue” mission and met a “new” player.  This individual asked a few basic questions in the general (white) chat channel about earning ped, which I answered to the best of my ability before heading out with the other MMC member toward Camp Phoenix.

After a short 30 minute hunt en route to Phoenix, we arrived to find the same person we had spoken with at Chug's now standing at the TP in Phoenix.

“Hello again!” I exclaimed in greeting, “Do you need help getting somewhere?”

“Actually, yes... I am trying to collect TP locations.”

After some casual conversation and a TP run to Zychion, I extended the offer of mentorship to this new player.

There were many questions during the course of the conversation, most of which I had no trouble answering.  This individual was also interested in joining our small society.  One question in particular struck me as quite interesting:

“What exactly does your cadets society do?”

At first I was not quite sure how to answer.  I know that a few of the “larger” and more “experienced” societies are quite specific… hunting societies, mining societies, organizations who's members are primarily crafters, etc.  MMC kind of does a little of everything, because as newer players we are all pretty much in the “experimental” stage, finding our individual path in the virtual world we call Calypso.

“Well,” I explained, “as cadets we really focus on learning how to play the game, and discovering what activities we enjoy most.  Once we have gained some experience, knowledge, and skill, we are then eligible to join the main society.”

“You mean, I don’t have to do anything specific?”

“Well, no.” I answered.  “You can do anything you want.”

“Well, how accessible are the members of the main society?”

“The main members?  Honestly, they are extremely accessible.”  As I typed this, I immediately thought of  the two MM members who had just recently crafted the Warrior Armor I was wearing.  “The MM members are always willing to help out and answer almost any question you may have.  Also, be sure to check out the MM Society website for additional information about what we do...”

“Cool!  Sounds great, I'll definitely get my application in at the Soc Terminal”.

Last night, as I was out doing some solo hunting near Sweat Camp, I continued to ponder “What we do”.  I was still thinking about how helpful every MMC and MM member is to one another in our quest to grow and flourish in the electronic universe of Entropia when I suddenly noticed a “green dot” approaching me from behind... someone in tattered OJ's with no weapon.

“You lost?”, I typed while blasting away on a molisk with my CB13.

“Actually, yeah... I'm new.  Only been playing 3 hours.”

After killing the molisk and looting it, I turned to the person now standing next to me.

“You need some help?”   Grin

That's what we do.  I would like to personally thank you Chrome for carrying our flag so proudly.

First impressions in EU/RL are very important and so are good morals.  Those of us who initially got the Cadets going, had envisioned exactly what you describe.  We recognized that while many of us had been helped early on by strangers in the game, a lot of us had been victim to scammers or lost interest quickly because it's no fun being stuck.  By being organized in an open way, and having this website for members to communicate ideas, we hoped to attract some of the most honest and helpful people in the game, and by doing so, build a good reputation that would positively reflect the values held by our leaders and other members.

It must have been 4 years ago when Fort rescued me from the outpost west of Troy - I remember how fortunate I felt that someone had come along and taken the time to help an OJ (actually I think I was wearing worn out TT armor Smile).  I also remember deciding that the Marber he was using was the ultimate in cool!!  Year's later, I still say hey to Fort when I see him, and tell everyone in the range of public chat how cool he is.  I do something similar, but far less polite, in public chat when I see Star  Angry  Guess what?  I doubt that any one of us actually wants to be in, or even be associated with, Menace to Society..

Way to go Chrome!

I agree the first impressions are important... It was only my second or third day of Entropia when I met Kedar at Sweat Camp.  From the very beginning, my mentor and fellow MMC member was extremely friendly and helpful!

I still feel this way about Szek... something about seeing that huge avatar swoosh in with a TP chip to a nasty outpost and promptly blast a path out for me with a Marber was almost heroic.

Even though I know I won't be very effective to hit or damage with an unlimited plasma rifle weapon, I still want a Marber.   Suprised

That is indeed what we do...

The original motive behind the creation of our society was to create a social group of individuals who would work, play, and have fun together, as friends, without the intense drive and pressures pushed upon individual members as is the case in a lot of other societies within EU. No need to "rush" to the top, no need to grind for hours upon hours doing exactly the same things over and over again to try to keep up with the Jonses, no need to take every action or inaction incredibly seriously... just have fun, help each other to achieve personal goals, goof around, learn and grow together, and make good, lasting friendships with honest, noble, and talented individuals.

Whether you are noob, uber, rich, poor, or somewhere in between those extremes, it doesn't matter. If you are a part of the Militia, then you are a part of our big, happy, dysfunctional family. flip We don't need to be the most famous, nor the richest, nor the biggest; we are the Militia. The few, the proud, and as FIRST would say: blah blah.

You'd have to join and participate to understand.  Tounge

The Cadets was meant to be the ultimate low-pressure society where the newcomers could explore, learn and grow, make new friends, and still have guidance and assistance from more experienced players.

Ha! I think we've all shown our dysfunctions. Except for maybe Trish, she seems to be fully functional  Tounge

Perhaps this should be our theme song:

Ok, so who wants to create the music video using this song and starrining MM & MMC members?  sing
